The Castle of Rochefort
It was built in the 11th century, but it is only in 1155 that we first heard of the Feudal Castle of Rochefort. The fortified town was attacked several times and fell under the domination of many families of which princes of the Empire. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the medieval fortress became a long and imposing castle of the Renaissance style. A splendid castle, very long and very high, was dominating the valley. These changes will appear during the 16th and 17th centuries. After the French revolution, the castle was put up for sale : its stones, its fittings, its lead, its slates went to the inhabitants of the region.
Archaeological and tourist site since the mid 80ies, the Castle of Rochefort gradually reveals its secrets, particularly thanks to the excavations of the shafts. A part of the objects found on the site is to see in the museum of the castle.
