Castle of Vêves
The Castle of Vêves appears like a mirage, standing in the middle of the green setting of Celles, close to Dinant. Each and every visitor will be charmed by this extraordinary view.
The castle was built in the 13th century, but parts of it were built in the 1700s. Like so many châteaux in the beautiful Belgian Ardennes, this one has been partially destroyed in the 15th century. It took many years before the Vêves Castle had been restored in its old glory.
Apart from the weapons room inside the castle, visitors can have a look at magnificent pieces of art from throughout the centuries. The 15th century stoneware pavement in the main room and the bridge that leads to the inside garden are particularly impressive. Visitors should definitely have a look in the secret room, where the Vêves Castle residents used to go spy and eavesdrop on the conversations going on in the weapons room.
This medieval castle is one of the oldest in Belgium, and for sure one of the best preserved. Because of its location on top of a hill it was protected against humidity. Still today, the owners, the count and the countess of Liedekerke-Beaufort, cannot stay away for more than one week. Visitors can feel the family atmosphere, created by the many family objects, paintings and pictures, gathered in the last 800 years by one and the same family.
