Malmedy is a mandatory stop when staying in the Belgian Ardennes. This city on the edge of the High Fens has a rich history and is home to many events the whole year round. Malmedy never sleeps!
The lovely city of Malmedy is located in the province of Liège, where the rivers Warche en Warchenne come together. The town is widely famous for its history and folklore and one could say it is a typical city in the Belgian Ardennes.
The cwarmé in March attracts thousands and thousands of locals, tourists and curious minds wanting to celebrate the start of spring. The city centre is home to many little bars and restaurants, which fill up quickly the very first sunny days of the year.
The monastery in the city centre has been completely renewed and transformed into a museum. Inside you can find some permanent studios (copper, carnaval,...) and superb temporary exhibitions. You get to know all about the rich history of this lovely city.
Baugnez Historical Center
This 850 square metre museum keeps the memory of the Battle of the Bulge alive. A film retracing the story of the Ardennes Offensive is shown.
“Une ville qui bouge”
There are activities in Malmedy the whole year through: it is very much a lively city. Activities for all ages and all moods are organised. The visitors will get to know the “Malmédiens”, always in for a party. The cwarmé, the Saint Pierre, 21 July, the Friday market and the giant omelette are just a few who deserve special attention.
Skiing in the Ardennes
The Belgian Ardennes – and the High Fens and Malmedy in particular – are a must during winter time. It is the perfect spot for (cross-country) skiing in Belgium. On www.Ardennes-Neige.be we keep you up-to-date on snow conditions in the south of Belgium.
For the kids!
There is a small playground in the centre of the city. A lovely pic-nick is just as well possible. The “promenade Blanche” (1.50km) is definitely suitable for the very young apple of your eye.
A good meal
We tested La Ferme de Bruyères in Malmedy for you. Enjoy a meal on the large sun terrace while the kids have fun on the playground just next to it.
You want to get to know Malmedy but you are not really sure where to start? You can follow the tourist rallies: some are walking distance; others are to be done by car. You can pick up the itineraries at the tourist information centre.
Good to know...
We are aware of the fact that it might be difficult to find the right address while you’re on holiday. Where to buy bread? Which butcher to go to? We list for you a few spots in Malmedy.
Butcher Bastin has been in Malmedy for over fifteen years and is definitely recommendable. It is located in the Rue-Chemin and shares its display window with the fish shop next door, which also deserves a recommendation.
Your oven fresh bread in the morning is at boulangerie Gonesse, Rue Abbée Peeters. They prepare their bread still using traditional methods.
You can do your day-to-day groceries at Le Pré Fleuri in Chemin-Rue. The prices are fair and it’s a pleasant place right in the city centre.
In need of dairy products? You should head to Amon Chavet at the Place de Rome, which offers more than 150 sorts of cheese and sandwich spreads. Many products are locally produced!
